Blurb: Danny Marshal has always lived his life out loud, but his androgynous appearance is only a small part of who he is. One night at a frat party, Danny meets Lance Lenard, football jock and apparent straight guy. Lance is shocked when he’s immediately attracted to Danny’s feminine side. Danny is happy to be the subject of Lance’s first man-on-man experiment—until Lance begins to struggle with the fact that despite his appearance, Danny is indeed a man.

Lance’s whole life has been focused on his goal of playing in the NFL, and he knows those dreams will be smashed if anyone finds out about his little secret. Although Lance has grown to crave Danny’s touch, he’s not willing to give Danny what he’s grown to crave: a boyfriend who’s proud to love him for every flamboyant and snarky cell in his body.

Life sends Danny and Lance in different directions, each of them focused on his respective Plan A. But the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

Review: There’s a little bit of almost everything for the reader in this one when it comes to trope. While it follows a familiar storyline, it does so with flair and wit. The men come from different worlds and seem to have nothing in common but the attraction that burns between them. Danny starts out thinking this will be some fun fantasy fulfillment for both men with no one the wiser and neither man getting hurt. Lance can’t seem to stay away from Danny and as the men spend more time together, they find they might not be as different as they thought. Both men struggle with stereotypes about sexual identity and personal expression and our need to define others and how much we fear exploring these needs within ourselves.

Danny Marshall is intentionally outrageous and he loves to tweak the noses of closed minded people. His style, which blurs the gender lines, is all about self-expression and knowing he looks hot. It’s not a political or even a sexual statement so much as wearing what makes him feel good and what he thinks is beautiful. I loved Danny, who is snarky, fun, and intelligent. His internal dialogue is very real and honest and at times feels stolen from inside my own head.

Lance Leonard is intense, smart, talented, and driven. His one plan for his life is to play in the NFL. Pursuing this dream doesn’t allow him to be honest with the world about his attraction to Danny. It’s easy to judge the closeted character, but the choices Lance is forced to make because of the world we live in aren’t within the normal range of expectation. Can love survive the sacrifice of your dream?

This story has fantastic secondary characters. I loved the relationship between Danny and his lifelong best friend, Bo. I appreciate it when stories include all of the various reactions and relationships that people have in their lives. Both men have solid relationships that give them strength and inject a dose of honesty and reality when they need it.

The chemistry between these sexy guys was intense. As Lance begins to explore his curiosity and discovers just how much pleasure there is in giving in to his desire for Danny, and what two men can do to each other, well let’s just say yum!

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it as a funny, touching, sweet, and sexy story about finding yourself and pursuing your dreams. These men aren’t perfect and both at times are selfish and immature, but isn’t that a part of growing up? I’m really glad I was a witness to the journey.
