Blurb: Kit Jefferies, a part-time department store Christmas elf, is an artist who loves life and his family. Unfortunately, his car dies at a rest stop in the middle of nowhere as he is heading home for Christmas. Enter Nick St. George.
Nick is a very unhappy man—he’s achieved his professional goals only to find the rest of his life bleak and empty. Deciding there was only one way to make everything right, he is on his way to San Francisco on a dark mission, and even the horrible sleet storm that blocked his path won’t deter him. That’s when he found Kit.
At first, Nick is pretty sure rescuing Kit was a big mistake. Kit’s personality is just too, well, effervescent. But as the miles go by, Kit begins to bring light to his dark heart. It might even be bright enough to illuminate a Christmas miracle.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2013 Advent Calendar package “Heartwarming”.
Beans: I have to admit, because it’s only fair, that I am a huge B.G. Thomas fan. He has his own folder in my e-reader, all neat and tidy with everything he has written in it. The best thing was I didn’t read the blurb and all I had to go on was the title and the cover.
Let me tell you, I didn’t expect to have my heart broken and then rebuilt again. It will be hard to top this novella, my fellow readers. It was splendid. Nick will tear you up, rip your heart out of your chest and make you want to either smack him upside the head or hug the stuffing out of him. His pain feels real.
Then he does something unexpected. He rescues Kit. Kit is alive and beautiful, both inside and out. If there is an opposite of Nick it’s Kit. He knows love, compassion and is amazingly patient with Nick. He proves himself to be truly amazing. I was time after time stunned at his patience and kindness in the face of mocking judgement.
He sees something in Nick. And eventually Nick allows himself to show Kit more.
I won’t ruin any more of this book but the ending had me gasping for breath. If you pick up only one novella this season… make it this one.
Nina: This is a great story. Redemption, change, letting go of the past and all it’s hurts, resentments, and bitterness.
This one grabbed me from the beginning and I was pulled along on their adventures. How do you not fall in love with Kit? How can someone full of so much beauty and goodwill resist the bittersweet joy of falling in love and freeing Nick?
I loved this novella. A wonderful new take on the Scrooge story that had me smiling, chuckling and even getting a bit misty. I wish that I could see Kit’s art, it sounds amazing.
