Quad Shot of Love

Blurb:  Moving to Kansas City could be the best thing Austin Shelbourne has ever done. For a start, he can stop living a lie and finally come out of the closet. And there’s a chance, though slim, that he might be able to locate the love of his life, Todd Burton. It had seemed like a good idea when he seduced his friend, but Todd freaked out and vanished. Austin hopes to find Todd, make things right between them, and win his love. But when he meets actor Guy Campbell, things get even more confusing.

The moment Guy sets eyes on Austin, he knows Austin is The One. But Austin makes it clear he feels a responsibility to Todd, and Guy has some dark secrets of his own. He’s found redemption in acting and directing, but worries that if Austin learns the truth, he might not be able bear it. And what if Todd accepts Austin’s apology and the love Austin offers? Guy wants Austin desperately, but he also wants him to be happy. In the play of life, with the happiness of good men in the balance, anything could happen.

Review: I like to be honest in my reviews, that’s why I need to tell you that until about the 60% mark of this book I was ready to mark it as DNF. I know! Shocking… but it was just so slow, everything was dragging, and it really felt like nothing was happening at all. I was bored. I was annoyed, because honestly Austin sounded more like a 15 year old girl than a 20 year old man.

The only thing that kept me going was Guy, our other MC, because he was interesting and caring, Austin didn’t deserve him at all. And Bodie, Austin’s uncle, and Bodie’s dog, they were adorable; Bodie was such a kind soul, a guide to Austin into the new gay scene. Such a wonderful man, a romantic at heart.

Then something happened, and BOOM! I had a crazy WTF? moment, in which I almost sent my kindle flying out the window of my fourth floor apartment.

I’m being truthful here, the book did a 180° change, Austin became a grown up. Angst was high, Guy showed his true self and to my surprise Austin accepted him, even though he didn’t recognize his feelings yet at this point, for us readers it was clear as day. Guy loved him so much it hurt to see.

Austin was a man on a mission, without realizing that his road to Todd might lead him to something else, someone else.

I enjoyed reading about Austin’s journey into this new life, his discovery of the gay scene, finding his place in the world and in that new “family”.

I knew what Guy was doing, helping Austin find Todd, but it was still very emotional to read and hope, while reading, that Austin will see Guy’s love.

And as per the meeting, well, it was uneventful. Honestly too much building up, or maybe it was that I really didn’t care about Todd at all. He was not important to our story anymore; he never was really, just a means to an end.
It was my first book by B.G. Thomas, maybe this is his usual style, I can’t tell for sure. I just know that even if it was imperfect, the turns of events made it a very interesting read.
