M.J. O’Shea’s New Seattle
The Setting of New Seattle
I started building this world back in 2010 when I was working on the first book in the series, Dark Sun. I wanted to take something that was familiar to me (Seattle) and make it completely new and foreign. Back when I was working on Dark Sun, I knew the setting had to be volatile and corrupt since I was working within the combined framework of Romeo and Juliet and Robin Hood, both of which feature heavy corruption. I also wanted it to be futuristic since I hadn’t explored that before and the idea of an alternate present was a bit daunting, so I went with the year 2199. I figured the dawn of a new century, political change, and upheaval all went well together!
I actually had a really fun time creating the world. I knew there had to have been a conflict in the past that destroyed much of the current city, and darkened the sky permanently and then I also incorporated the common sci-fi city setting and made New Seattle vertical instead of sprawling like the current city and its suburbs are. It’s dirty and gritty and disgusting except the highest levels where the corrupt and rich triad rulers live.
Even more fun than the city itself were the little details about the society, the drugs, the ‘triads’ that run the city and the government, the little gadgets and food and clothing. I wanted it to be recognizable and familiar as far as sci-fi worlds go but have some fun new details. You asked if I’d like to live in my created version of Seattle and the answer is no, I would definitely not want to live in the Seattle I created! Most of the city is pretty awful, there are crime lords and heavy drug trafficking, crime lords and a seedy underworld. Plus, even if we don’t have a lot of sun they don’t have daylight at all! I’d pass on that for sure:)
Here’s an unofficial blurb for Rising Sun:
Castor Kovalenko, socialite and high ranking member of the Dragon Triad, is worried about his cousin, Lynx. He’s been missing for weeks and there have been rumors circling the city, rumors that he’s been taken hostage by the hacker thief Yoru Katana. Castor needs to find his cousin before it’s too late. He’s willing to do nearly anything to bring Lynx to safety.
Jaffa Sharp is trying to stay alive. It’s not easy when the only thing you’ve ever learned to do is steal. Even harder when he keeps running into one annoying Dragon prince who keeps trying to get him arrested.
When Castor uses Jaffa to get to his cousin and the thief Katana, they both learn that nothing is as it seemed, including Lynx and Katana himself. Castor and Jaffa soon become involved in a plot to take the city back from the villainous triads. They find themselves fighting the people they thought were their leaders — and fighting an attraction stronger than either of them have felt before. Nothing is certain in the precarious new world they find themselves in: Life, death, friend, enemy, and the most uncertain thing of all…love.
Thanks for having me stop by!

I’m Mj O’Shea, author of erotic romance–well all sorts of romance actually, that’s just what’s been published so far!
I grew up, and still live, in sunny Washington state and while I love to visit other places, I can’t imagine calling anywhere else home.
I spent my childhood writing stories. Sometime in my early teens, the stories turned to romance. Most of those were about me, my friends, and our favorite tv stars. Hopefully, I’ve come a long way since then…
Right now, I have four books published through Republica Press (click on the link to visit their site), but I’m constantly working on new projects.
When I’m not writing, I love to play the piano and cook and paint pictures…and of course read. It’s nearly impossible to work on my own writing when I’ve gotten myself hooked into a great new book:) I like sparkly girly girl things, own at least twenty different colored headbands, and I have a little white dog with a ginger eye spot who sits with me when I write. Sometimes she comes up with ideas for me too…when she’s not napping.
