Quad Shot of Love

Blurb:  Ben Rivers always was a showman. He won awards in 4-H and rodeo competitions from the time he could walk, and he’s happiest in the spotlight. So when he got the chance to be a star—in porn—he took it. He still loves Montana and everything about being a cowboy, but when news of his alternate identity leaks out, he figures he’s lost the town’s goodwill forever. Clyde’s Corner would never accept an openly gay cowboy, even a hometown boy born and bred.

Joshua Braintree always had the notion that he and his best friend’s kid brother, Ben, would end up together. Ben’s always been a diehard cowboy, just like him: they need the land and its freedom as much as they need air. So when Joshua learns Ben moved away from their small Montana town to be a porn star in Vegas, he can hardly believe it. He’s determined to finally declare himself and bring Ben home.

Despite his longtime crush on Joshua, Ben won’t be as easy to tame as Joshua’s “lost cause” horses. It will take a lot of heart and holiday spirit for Joshua to convince Ben that even old prairie dogs can learn new tricks in the name of love.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2013 Advent Calendar package “Heartwarming”.

Beans:  I made a rule and didn’t read any excerpts in this entire novella anthology. I’m glad I didn’t because I might have skipped a good read if I had decided to skip this story because of the reference to porn.

But this story was more than that. It was about two men finding their identities and home. One fled and the other hid.  They both had to come to some hard realizations before they could come together. I loved that their families and community were a pulling force.

It was beautifully written and thought out. The men were easy to understand. I fell in love with Joshua. He is so private. He struggles with his love for his friend. He doesn’t hope well, and it causes him to have to rethink everything, change everything.

Ben is young and his heart hurts. He has decided he wants too much and runs away hoping to find some solace or escape. Even though he is young, his strength gave me much to admire.

Nina:   Won’t it be awesome when a persons sexuality is no longer considered an issue for discussion or judgement in this country?

Joshua was much more open minded and forgiving than I gave him credit for.  He was able to see past the porn and the other men and keep his eye on his love for Ben. His ability to step outside of his comfort zone and become what Ben needed, was awesome.  I couldn’t help but fall for this strong and brave man who was willing to become the man his love needed him to be, always.

Ben was adorable, naive and unexpectedly innocent.  He might have been with men in pornos, but he never became jaded or hard.  I was proud of him for demanding what he deserved from Joshua and not allowing himself to be a secret.

The romantic aspect was well done. I loved the way that they stood proud and united. I really enjoyed this novella.
